t's time to get all fired up because, The Hangout, everybody's
favorite
beach scene, is back! We're ready to pick up where we left off... fun,
fun, fun - even if someone tries to take your T-Bird away. In the late
1950's and early 1960's The Hangout was the coolest place to meet on
the beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama - a place where worries went out
the window, even though there weren't that many windows ( it was open
air - more beach more breeze the better ). Parents could just take
their kids to play and man, teens from all over the Southeast would be
there ready to have a blast. Yep, arcade, pinball, root beer,
twenty-five cent hamburgers and a chance to bust out the latest dance
craze; that was the life. Crusin' in a muscle car was always really
big. Drivin' up and down the street and around the Hangout parking lot
for everybody to stare, cause your ride was number one on your
"cool-o-meter." The Hangout wasn't just a place, it was the place -
"meet me at the Hangout" was an invitation to celebrate life at the
beach.
The beach was the perfect location too. Ol' Larry Autrey always made
sure we were all safe, you see he was the first official lifeguard for
Gulf Shores and he was posted right at The Hangout. Going to the beach
everyday - pretty tough job, right? When the surfing and dance crazes
hit, the Hangout was ground zero. Lucky for Larry, Wipeout was one of
the most popular songs ( you couldn't exactly call falling off your
board on a gnarly 2-foot wave a wipeout ). The jukebox was jammed with
the latest dance music, you could: Twist, Frug, Swim, Mash Potato, Pony
or Watusi the night away.
These days The Hangout is back and better than ever. So, okay... maybe
Ola won't be chasing anyone with a cattle prod anymore, but, if you
want, but you can still try to outdo Linda Autory's record of 17"
(Like, wow that's low!) in our far-out limbo contest. And holy
cowabunga, have we got a great menu of food and drinks including the
best burgers period. All of your beach favorites, and some new Hangout
specials that will keep you coming back again and again to share
memories and to make new ones every time you visit. This is the place
to let loose, laugh with family and friends, and above all, let the
good times roll... so shaka baby! Hal.
